Energy efficient homes have become very important to most home builders and home owners. “Green” building, or Environmentally Friendly, are popular terms used to describe homes that are energy efficient, and are built to use less energy and provide environmentally clean living structures. We, at Hillstone Homes, use a rating system used by many builders to “rate” the energy efficiency of the home. It is called the HERS system. HERS stands for Home Energy Rating System. It is based upon the International Conservation Code of 2006, or ICC 2006 energy rating system. A rating of 100 is the base rating for a house that meets the energy code. The lower the number, the better the rating. Hillstone Homes offers quality products that meet or exceed the building codes. We also offer insulation packages that cause our homes to exceed building codes. With our insulation packages, the HERS ratings on our homes go as low as the high 50’s to the mid 60’s, depending on the home and the insulation package. These are outstanding ratings. All of the other practices we use to make our homes energy efficient are standard in the house regardless of the insulation package you choose.
Another energy building standard is “Energy Star”. This system was developed by the U.S. Government to rate the energy efficiency of a home. To meet this standard, the home has to be built to all Energy Star requirements. Hillstone Homes builds its houses to meet Energy Star requirements. In order to get an Energy Star certificate on the home, Hillstone Homes has to have an independent certified company inspect the home while under construction at several key points, plus have a “blower door” inspection at the end. We conduct all of these tests and present our buyer with an Energy Star certificate when they move in.
All of the energy efficiency features we use are standard in our homes. The only options we offer to make your home more energy efficient are our insulation packages and upgraded SEER ratings on your HVAC system. HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. Our homes have a 14 SEER HVAC system as standard. However, you will be able to upgrade your home to a higher SEER system as an option if you desire.
Up to 80% of the cool air in the summer, or warm air in the winter, escapes from your home through the ceiling of the home and through the doors and windows. Therefore it is important to have adequate insulation in the ceiling of the home and to have energy efficient doors and windows that are sealed well. Our homes feature vinyl window frames with Low E3 coated windows. Our exterior doors are insulating doors. We make sure our windows and doors are sealed properly.
A real bonus our buyers obtain is that Hillstone Homes is an "Environments For Living" (EFL) member. This means we have to build our homes at Energy Star plus standards and have EFL inspect our homes. For this, our buyers get an EFL certificate which guarantees the heating and cooling bills for the first three years of their home ownership.
